Updated 7/8/10
In November I made a number of predictions (here, here, and here) about s3 to see how closely we might be able to anticipate where the writers were going with the story. In this post, I focused on Sookie and Eric’s first meeting in s3. These predictions were based on the realization that Jason and Eric are doppelgangers and have parallel story lines. I predicted that Sookie and Eric’s first scene of s3 would parallel Sookie and Jason’s first scene of s2. Some of these predictions are extremely mundane, for example, Sookie goes to Fangtasia. Notice how this predicted scenario differs from Club Dead though. In the book, the Fang Gang all showed up at Sookie’s house to inform her of Bill’s kidnapping and then Eric threatened to torture her. In this case, the book was a poor predictor of how the scene would play out, but the scene in season 2 when Sookie informed Jason of Uncle Bartlette’s death was a fantastic predictor.
The info in brackets is [new or additional wording.] I didn’t change any meanings, just added info or made the language more precise to heighten the parallel.
Club Dead: Eric, Pam, and their new employee, Chow, visit Sookie.
Season 2: Sookie interrupts Hoyt and Jason talking at work [while taking a break.]
Prediction: Sookie will interrupt Eric and Pam at Fangtasia.
Season 3: Sookie does interrupt Eric and Pam at work while Eric is ‘taking a break’ with his new employee.
*The most important thing here is that I was able to predict which s3 scene would correspond to this s2 one.
(Spoiler photo added 5/10)
Club Dead:
Season 2: Hoyt says he’s sorry to hear about the discovery of Ms. Jeanette’s body at Merlotte’s.
Prediction: Pam will say she was sorry to hear about Sookie’s recent ordeal in Dallas.
Season 3: With her tongue in her cheek, Pam apologized to Eric about allowing Sookie to interrupt him and Yvetta.
*The take away here is that Pam did offer an apology, just like Hoyt did.
Club Dead: Eric tells Sookie that Bill has been kidnapped.
Season 2: Sookie tells Jason that Uncle Bartlette is dead.
Prediction: Sookie will tell Eric that Bill has been kidnapped.
Season 3: Sookie will tell Eric that Bill has been kidnapped.
*TB reversed Sookie and Eric’s roles, and that was able to be predicted perfectly.
Club Dead:
Season 2: Jason asks what happened, and Sookie tells him about the insurance agent’s visit.
Prediction: Eric will ask what happened, and Sookie will tell him about her evening with Bill.
Season 3: Sookie asks where Bill is and what Eric has been doing all night.
*The prediction was good, but I got Sookie and Eric’s roles reversed.
Club Dead:
Season 2: Sookie adds that Uncle Bartlette left her an inheritance.
Prediction: Sookie will add that Bill asked her to marry him.
Season 3: Sookie adds that Eric owes her $10,000 before leaving.
*This prediction was off, but notice how what happed in s3 follows perfectly from its s2 antecedent.
Club Dead:
Season 2: Jason is hurt to find out that Uncle Bartlette didn’t remember him in his will.
Prediction: Eric will be hurt to find out that Sookie accepted Bill’s proposal.
Season 3: Many have commented on Eric’s look of disappointment when he sees the ring on Sookie’s finger as she head up stairs.
Club Dead:
Season 2: Sookie [is there to deliver] the check to Jason.
Prediction: Sookie will give Eric her engagement ring to finance the investigation.
Season 3: Pam delivers the check to Sookie the next night.
*Again the prediction is off, but what happened follows from what happened in s2.
(Spoiler photo with Sookie’s ring around Eric’s neck added 5/10–Actually, I’m reconsidering this image. I no longer think it’s Sookie’s ring. The proportions look mansized. So…whose ring is it, and why does Eric move it to his finger after the confrontation with Sophie Anne at Fangtasia? Could it belong to his father, King Ulfric? By putting it on his finger, is Eric declaring that he has played his last game of Yahtzee and that Sophie Anne better watch her back?)
Club Dead:
Season 2: Jason suggests he and Sookie split the money, but Sookie insists Jason take all of it.
Prediction: Eric will suggest another way to finance the trip to Jackson, but Sookie will insist he take the ring.
Season 3: Eric added a bonus to Sookie’s check.
*The take away from s2 is that Sookie is overly generous with Jason, which parallels Eric s3 being generous with her.
Club Dead:
Season 2: Jason sees the windfall as a sign from God to go to FOTS and gives thanks.
Prediction: Eric will see the situation as an opportunity to win Sookie and will be visibly thankful.
Season 3: It is clear that is exactly how Eric views Bill’s kidnapping and his feelings for Sookie are easy to see on his face. It also gives him the opportunity to go to Jackson and appease his anger at Russell Edington paralleling Jason going to Dallas because of his hatred of vampires.
So, what is the take away from all this?
1. If you are familiar with the books, it’s fairly easy to predict which major scenes will correspond.
2. The parallels are very detailed, but challenging to predict because there are so many variables.

You know, rings do figure prominently on True Blood. We’ve discussed before how weirdly the camera focused on Mack Rattray’s ring, which seemed to get more screen time than he did! lol. Sookie’s ring and the possibility that it is enchanted, the circle motifs of the opening sequence of s1 ep1..I’m sure we could think of more if we put our minds to it.
Yes, all the rings are muy importante. I think Eric’s ring corresponds to Jason’s honesty ring last season. It’s going to prod him to get out of his comfort zone and act. The question is what does the ring represent and what is it going to inspire him to do.
Oh yeah, I forgot about the honesty ring. Jason became dissillusioned and threw his at Steve Newlin so maybe Sookie will do the same because she finds out about Bill’s dishonesty?
Or maybe Jason foreshadows Eric in that the ring foreshadows the shattering of some of his own illusions?
Yeah. I think he’ll use it to get out of his comfort zone, but at some point, he’ll move beyond it like Jason did.
I also liked the point you brought up about the ring motif in the first scene of episode 1. AB has carried it through the series in spades with braclets on every arm, necklaces around every neck, and lots of hoop earrings. There was even one pair with three or four hoops for each ear! Have you noticed the ginormous watches all the men in Bon Temps wear?
No I hadn’t but I will def be keeping an eye out from now on.
*The eternal return of Ouroboros,an ancient symbol depicting a serpent or dragon swallowing its own tail and forming a circle.
Exactly so. It looks like the rings represent the circle of life that Amy talked so much about, karma, the eternal, and the hermetic parallel storylines, which become wheels within wheels.
In addition to the ouroboros, there is something going on with chains, the way they connect and enslave, so the rings can also be seen as links within a giant eternal chain tying everyone together for good or bad.
I think it might have something to do with The Great Chain of Being, making supes and vampires and all manner of other fantastical creatures part of the rational world since it is premised on the idea that whatever is possible must be and everywhere there is a gap in creation, it must be filled with different gradations.
hey peeps, loving the page.
wasn’t mack’s ring a bicycle chain, which could have represented the chain sookie flung around his neck, which in turn magically tightened?
i thought it was funny jason used his honesty ring dishonestly to get sookie, then freaked out when his saw part of luke’s hand with it.
one tiny question, if you came out of the bathroom to that scene in the restaurant, would you immediately think kidnap?
personally i would think ‘shit he thinks i said no, got angry and left’
whaddya think?
Good call connecting Mack’s ring to Jason’s chain. There seems to be a chain motif running throug the show–Denise and Amy’s silver chains, Laffy’s slave collar, all the chains that so many of the characters wear, metaphorically the food chain that Amy obsesses over, and the great chain of being that links all the characters.
don’t suppose maryann had a star burst ring? after what sookie did….
And Russell has a large ring on his index finger. Apparently the index finger is thought to be especially powerful & wearing a ring on that finger signifies authority & ambition.
Good point!
Anna, I think the ring that Russell wears is a family heirloom. That is, Eric’s family. That may be what triggers memories for Eric because I think the ring belonged to his father. Just a guess, but it is a big honking ring, hard to miss, and Eric will be meeting Russell at some point.
Bobsgran, you may well be right, it is enormous. Also kings often wore rings on that finger.
Maybe Eric has his own ‘prince ring’ and RE has his father’s ‘king ring.’
Eric and Russell ring may be th same .
Russell ring may be from Eric father and it may be bigger cause he was a king .
Eric ring smaller cause him beening the son next in line .
Great minds think alike!
Sorry Renee
we had same idea
Never hurts to say something twice. ;~)
That’s what all the doppelgangers and parallel stories are for.
Season 2
Eric tie up in chain in th church
Bill in church did not get chain off Eric
Sookie did
season 3
Tara tie up
Ask Bill for help he said No
Nice one, Enjoying! I think this is definitely what we will see. Bill Compton looking the other way, just like he did with Hadley when he decided not to tell her about Gran’s death.
I think this ties in with this idea
Season 2 episode 9:
Bill tells Sookie to turn the other cheek and ignore someone else that is about to die (godric).
Season 3 Prediction:
Bill will once again tell Sookie to ignore someone else that is about to die or might die – human or vampire(could be anyone).
Right on. Bill cares about no one human or vampire, except Sookie.
Bill did not tell Hadley cause she may have come back to BT and tallk to Sookie about Bill and the queen
Season Sookie gets the chain off of Bill
I like that prediciton
Season 2:
Eric saves sookie’s life early on in the season.
(episode 3)
Season 3:
Eric saves sookie’s life early on in the season.
(episode 3)
So my prediction is as follows:
Season 2: Eric saves Sookie’s life later on in the season.
(episode 9)
Prediction: Eric saves Sookie’s life later on in the season.
(possibly episode 9?)
I’m not certain that it’s in every book, my sense is that this is a pattern CH established. In the early books, at least, Eric seemed to always put in two appearances, one at the beginning and one close to the end.
I didn’t even think of the book parallels until
after the fact. I just thought it was too much
to ignore that eric saved her life in episode
3 of the last season and then once again in
episode 3 of this season.
Definitey too much of a coincidence to ignore!
I guess I should have stuck more to the book ideas since its the topic but I thought I would throw these out there
Not at all! All ideas are welcome, and I often don’t distinguish whether I’m referring to the books or show. Actually this would be a good thread to use for all the parallel predictions for S3.
After re-watching the “Shake and Fingerpop” episode from season 2 (2.04), I thought I’d offer up some parallels for the upcoming “9 Crimes” episode, based on the promos that HBO has put out so far.
2.04 Sarah Newlin comes into the Jason’s bedroom at the Newlins, wearing a white negligee.
3.04 Eric comes into Sookie’s bedroom at Alcide’s apartment. Sookie is wearing a white silk robe.
2.04 Tara’s birthday party that Maryann threw for her turned into an orgy
3.04 Debbie Pelt’s raucous engagement party
2.04 Sheriff Bud Dearborn asks Andy Bellefleur to hand in his detective badge.
3.04 Jason asks Andy Bellefleur (who is now Sheriff since Bud Dearborn so dramatically quit in episode 3.03) to make him a Deputy.
Sookie’s ass is always being saved in the nick of time by some supe hunk anyways (Eric, Alcide, Bill, Sam, etc).
Kinsey (may have mis-spell name if so sorry) she was in season 2 frist show talking to Sookie
She talking to Sookie season 3 frist show
I believe that would be Kenya. She’s so no-nonsense and literal, she cracks me up every time. I wonder if she’s getting it on with Kevin like in the books. ROTFL! That I would love to see.
The reason Pam is in trouble is the call Sookie made to
Isabel in Dallas about Bill being missing.
I wonder if Eric was expecting something like this. If he was worried about Pam getting hung out to dry, giving the car to Laffy makes sense. SA can’t just order Eric to let Pam rot if the magister can tie Eric to operation.
I’ve been thinking about Jason being questioned by Andy and Bud, the effects of his V overdose (cough, cough), and Tara getting him out of the police station and to the hospital.
I think this is going to parallel Eric and Pam.
s1 Jason is questioned about killing Dawn.
s3 Eric is questioned about the V sales.
s1 Jason gets a sudden, agonizingly painful attack of Priapism from consuming too much V.
s3 Eric is attack with agonizing pain when Sookie is staked because she consumed his blood.
s1 Tara gets him released from custody and takes him to the hospital.
s3 Pam gets rid of the magister and helps Eric.
s1 Tara recalls how Jason stood up to her mother when she was a child.
s3 Pam recalls Eric saving her from her parents.
The Magister will show up because of the call to Isabel in Dallas ,he will know that Eric told a lie.Cause know Isabel about going to see Eric .The Mastiser will get Eric to go to Miss. to fine Bill and see What Russell up to cause the Magister knows that Russell is behind the V beening giving to were-wolfs.Eric will try to kill Russell and Talbot will get kill .Russell will have it out for Eric then .
I like your prediction about how the Magister is shown torturing Pam in the Fangtasia basement because of Sookie’s call to Isabel. I hadn’t even noticed Sookie’s call and had to go back to re-watch that scene in episode 3.01 where Pam comes to give Sookie the check.
Is Sunday here yet?
Yes! That is a great connection.
Eric will save Sookie again after Bill trys to turn her .
Tara will tell Sookie what Bill has done from his dinner to telling her no about helping her.
Franklin will be the one to tell Russell about Sookie .He will know Bill was trying to kept him a way from a prize human and he will be upset with Bill.Russell will know what Bill was doing in BT for the queen .I am not sure Bill is not like Franklin he may be a PI.for the queen hes all ways act like he was better then Eric and he all ways laugh about him. Yes Bill trying to get Eric Kill he wants him out of the way cause when Eric fine out about the plans that thqueen and Bill has he will tell Sookie

s3 Alcide and Sookie have a bonding experience disposing of the were’s body.
s1 Sookie recognizes the Neil from her first night at Fangtasia.
s3 Sookie will recognize someone she saw at Lou Pine’s.
s1 Sam rolls around in Dawn’s bed sniffing her sheets.
s3 Alcide will demonstrate his super sensitive wolf smell in some weird way.
s2 Andy and Jason become grudging allies in the common goal to stop Maryann.
s3 Bill and Eric become grudging allies in the common goal to save Sookie from Russell.
Right!
one of my favorites so far
Bill does not tell the queen all about Sookie
Bill does not tell Russell about Sookie
Sookie help’s Tara in season 2
Sookie help Tara in season 3
Sookie at the grave yard for Grand S1
Sookie at the grave yard for Eggs S3
Sookie gets hurt S1 S2 and S3
Sookie had blood on her floor S1
Sookie had blood on her floor S3
Sookie cleaning house worry boiut Bill S1
Sookie and Jason cleaning house after party of Mary Ann S3
Sookie cleaning house worry boiut Bill S1
Sookie and Jason cleaning house after party of Mary Ann S3
I want to highlight this parallel because Sookie’s cleaning is always significant. It indicates that Bill’s hot, dry, chaotic, flammable, ineffectual, black alchemical stage is over and Eric’s wet, white, purifying, life affirming, learning stage is underway.
1.06 & DUD Sookie arrives at Malcolm’s nest after the fire, everything is wet and soggy (soggy ashes is classic white stage imagery). She goes home and cleans. She goes to Bill’s grave in the rain. They have life affirming graveyard sex.
2.03 Dr. Ludwig cleans Sookie’s wounds and purifies her blood. In CD Sookie showered at FT after the transfusion.
3.02 Sookie and Jason clean. In CD, Eric persuades ‘unhygenic Sookie’ to shower.
With each season, the black stage is shorter and the white stage is longer.
s4/DTTW is huge because at least 3/4 of the book is the white stage. It is unique because it marks the white stage for the entire series not just for the book or season.
It starts with pages and pages of light in the darkness, rain, and washing. We get the foot washing, the shower scene, and a good soaping by Eric himself. Swoon! s4 AE will be very busy setting Sookie’s house back to right and cleaning it up. Uniquely this book ends with the black stage, when Sookie as to give up AE, instead of starting with it like all the others.
Sam had money in a bag to give Mary Ann S2
Tommy had Sam money in a bag S3
Yes!
2.04 MA, Eggs, Karl show up at Sookie’s and movie in
3.03 The Mickenses show up at Merlotte’s
3.04 Tommy moves in
2.04- Eric comes in through Lafayette’s window
3.04-Eric comes in through Alcide’s window
2.04- Eric literally flys out of state
3.04- Eric literally flys out of state.
2.04- Eric speaks with Lafayette
3.04-Eric speaks with Lafayette
2.04-Lafayette is in poor physical condition
3.04-Lafayette is in poor physical condition
2.04- Sam “shifts” or “changes at a party.
3.04-Alcide “changes” at a party.
2.04- People gather at for a special occasion-tara’s bday

2.04-Maryann invades sookie’s home
3.04-Franklin invades sookie’s home
2.04- Bill calls eric on the phone
3.04-Bill calls sookie on the phone
Now for some wild guesses:
2.04- Tara and Eggs have sex for the first time.
3.04- Eric and Sookie have sex for the first time
(eric and sookie kiss for the first time)
2.04- Someone plays a practical joke on Jason
3.04- Someone plays a practical joke on Jason or someone else
2.04- Jason has a fantasy about mrs.newlin
3.04-Someone has a fantasy about somone
(maybe jason has one, maybe eric/sookie thing is part fantasy)
2.04-Bill questions Eric’s motivations
3.04-Eric questions Sookie’s motivations
or
Sookie questions Eric’s motivations
I noticed that sookie and eric met in episode 4 season 1.
now, they might kiss/have sex in episode 4 season 1.
2.04- Sookie goes out of state for Eric
3.04-Eric goes out of state for Sookie.
relationship progression:
1.04-Sookie meets Eric
2.04-Sookie goes out of her way for Eric.
3.04-Sookie and Eric kiss/makeout/have sex for the firs time.
*the second one…episode 4 season 3
Your Eric and Laffy predictions are particularly interesting TTB. I’m kinda wondering if Eric will drink some more Lafayette, too.
I do not think they will have sex untill S4
WISH:D they would
I do think there will be kissing going on with Alcide and Eric
Me I trip Eric beat him to the ground
REALLY??? Alicide and Eric???? ROTFL!!!
(Sorry, enjoying! That was just toooo easy.)
ALCIDE/ERIC! im a total shipper
JK
I don’t want her to kiss Alcide too…though it may happen. I think it would cheapen the kiss with Eric.
I think there will be some tension when Sookie gives Alcide a backrub or bandages a wound and then he’ll kiss her on the forehead.
I am so on board with your forehead kiss theory!
All bets are off on what Eric and Alcide will do when they see each other, though!
Whatever happens tonight, we can be assured that it will be real, logical, and realistic. Unlike “Bad Blood” and “It Hurts Me Too”. In the alternating pov theory, it’s Eric’s turn. Bill is odd numbered eps and Eric is even, so far. Which gives me hope for the finale, lol.
Although, I’m still thinking that if Sookie is drained and receives a transfusion, the competing ‘influences’ of the two vamps will be neutralized and hopefully we will, be treated to a neutral omnicient pov from that point forward.
if this happens it will be sweet relief to me. Bill and his cheesy dramatics and self-serving bullshit scenes of ‘aching nobility’ and ‘tragic suffering’ have gotten on my last damn nerve.
So everyone, look out tonight for the TIME GLITCHES, which are the only glitches I can discern in Eric-centric eps. In Bill-centric eps every glitch EXCEPT time glitches can be found. Even in Jason’s dream in “It Hurts Me Too” the seconds ticked away on the clock and time moved forward quite realistically.
LOL you got me
Sookie will kiss Alcide
(in the books Alcide and Sookie kiss they also dance
CH put a song they dance to
I not sure if she will end up with Eric but Alcide book only)
Sookie will kiss Eric
2.01- Sookie cuts her finger while packing up Gran’s things.
Recieves “blood money” from Uncle B’s estate.
3.01- Jason cuts his hand cleaning up shards from a broken lamp.
Will Jason pay some sort of “blood money” to Tara?
Will Jason pay some sort of “blood money” to Tara?
No doubt.
He’s also already benefiting from Egg’s death, just like Sookie did from UB’s. She got rid of the insurance money. Will Jason wise up?
BTW, Renee what is supposed to be Bill’s talent? RE states he is one of the most talented young vampires in QSA queendom. Is it his grifting abilities, glamouring, piano playing? I think I’ve missed something. Wouldn’t be the first time. LOL
On the show it looks to me like Bill’s gift is glamour.
It’s clearly not sex or flying. Couldn’t Book Bill fly or hover?
Thank you Renee. As far as Book Bill, all I can remember is his computer skills. It’s been a while since I’ve read the books.
I haven’t read the books, but it cracks me up that a 150-year-old vampire’s special skills is computer skills. I’m glad that the show changed that to glamour skills.
Welcome snark!
No Bill couldn”t fly or hover
Renee, you left out his talent of being a douche. lol.
I feel like he might have a talent and we just don’t know about it yet. QSA had him working as her investigator for a reason, if thats what he is. I mean maybe its more than glamouring, and its like he attracts/charms people albeit unconsciously and this is one of the reasons Lorena is so obsessed with him too.
FM seems like he has a talent of finding things, and that is not a talent we’ve come across before, so I dunno.
Good points all, Serena!
ROTFL! Bill’s gift is being a douche!
Bills gifts in the books was
smell
hearing
memory
S1 Rene ask Arlene to get married
S2 Bill ask Sookie to get Married
S3 Fanklin ask Tara to get married
S4 Eric ask Sookie to get Married
S1 Rene and Arlene wedding
S2 Mary Ann and her God wedding
S3 Franklin and Tara wedding?
OR
S3 king and queen wedding
s1 Rene gives Arlene a ring
s2 Bill give Sookie a ring
S3 Franklin will give Tara a ring
Or
King will give queen a ring
S1 Bill gives Sookie roses She throws at Bill in the car
S2 Sam gives Tara flowers She throws at Sam out side
S3 Holt give Jessica She pick them up take in the house
Jessica is smarter
S1 Tara dances with Eggs
S2 Sookie dances with Bill
S3 Alcide dance with Sookie
S1 Sookie go off on Bill
S1 Sam goes off on Sookie
S1 Tara goes on a guy at the bar
S2 Sam goes off on Sookie
S2 Sookie off on Eric
S2 Tara goes off on Eggs
S3 Sookie goes off on Alcide
S3 Sam goes off on Tommy
S3 Tara goes off on the red necks
More fodder for speculating and predicting! Someone posted the official episode summaries for episodes 7-11 at the IMDB.
Spoilers abound, so proceed with caution:

Thanks for spreading the news, Artemis!
I’ve been thinking about the magister’s reference to Goody Osborn in 3.04. Of course it is foreshadowing for the upcoming witch war/witch hunt, but it may also relate to Caroline Compton. Sarah Osborn was one of the first women in Salem accused of being a witch and harboring the devil. Goody is an abbreviation of Goodwife, a form of address. By using the term Goody instead of her name, the magister may be foreshadowing that Caroline Compton, Bill’s good wife, will be accused of harboring the devil by the Bellefluers, probably the kid Bill wanted to shoot in his flashback. Of course this will only be relevant if Lorena and Bill have been living with Caroline for the 3 years before Tommy dies as MC has speculated.
It also relates to Sookie, Bill’s good fiancée, ‘harboring the devil’ by hiding Eric s4. Sarah’s dreams were one of the things that was used to condemn her.
