Each season in episode 2, True Blood has a mother’s day, a day when someone’s difficult mother is introduced.
In season 1 it was Lettie Mae.
In season 2 it was Mrs. Hamby.
Season 3 introduced both Ruby Jean and Melinda Mickens in the second episode.
In season 4 episode 2 will introduce another mother, and I’m predicting she will belong to Jesus. That is the episode Antonia, described as Spanish speaking and fierce, begins a 5 episode arch. The 41 year old Paola Turbay has been cast in the role.
When Jesus saw Lafayette’s shrine to Our Lady of Guadelupe, he said, “That’s my girl, Tonantzin.” By whichever name, in addition to being the mother of Jesus, she is considered to be the mother of the Mexican people. Her Nahuatl name, Tonantzin, is very close to Antonia’s. Just take off the first syllable and you’re left with something very close to Antonia, ‘Antzin.
Antonia and ‘Antzin are the mothers of sons named Jesus. They were also both very young women who became single mothers through no action of their own. One Jesus is the divine child of God and the other the magical child of a rapist. It has been speculated that Antonia was raped by an incubus. That would make Lafayette’s Jesus a cambion* in the tradition of Merlin and Caliban, the witch’s son in The Tempest who is enslaved to Prospero. Because of their supernatural parent, cambions are often evil, but they are not all so.
Jesus explained to Lafayette that he was born in Catemaco, the island of witches, but that his mami dragged him to Texas, Uruguay, Portugal, and Montreal, among other place trying to escape his grandfather, who practiced black magic and had big plans for Jesus. Of their destinations, Montreal is an interesting one for a rape victim with a history of witchcraft in her family. The subject of the first and most famous witchcraft trial in New France was a spell that rendered a man impotent. What is a fierce woman, but one who can castrate a man, figuratively or literally? Look for Antonia to be able to do both.
Can this amazonian Antonia really be reconciled to the Blessed Virgin Mary? It depends on your view of Mary. Catholics interpret Genesis 3:15 as a prophecy of her crushing the head of Satan.
I will put enmities between thee and the woman, and they seed and her seed; she shall crush thy head, and thou shalt lie in wait for her heel.
This reference to a woman in the first book of the Bible is said to foreshadow the woman in the last book.
And a great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Revelation 12:1
The icon of the Virgin of Guadalupe is an image of Mary at this moment in time. She stands in front of the sun with the moon at her feet and stars on her head. ”Guadalupe” is probably the phonetic equivalent of the title, “She who breaks, stamps or crushes the serpent.”
With Antonia’s 5 episode arch and the characterization of her as fierce, it’s pretty much a given that she will be leaving someone in pain. The only question is who. If she is anything like her namesake, it will be the one who harms her son. The only problem is that Jesus doesn’t appear to have any enemies. Midnight Charm has suggested that Jesus is working for Bill. If this is the case, I’m not sure it’s of his free will. He may be like the witches son, Caliban, who is forced to serve Prospero in The Tempest. Is Antonia coming to free her son from Bill? After all, he has already been identified as the snake in the garden.
If Antonia is able to free Jesus from Bill, does it cost his life? Images of the pieta in Lafayette’s house and Abuelo’s cave may be foreshadowing his death.
ETA: Although a spoiler has revealed that Antonia is not Jesus’ biological mother, I still think that she will be a mother figure to him, possibly an aunt who raised him after his mother was killed or the incarnation of Tonatzin herself.
*Selle first proposed that Jesus was a cambion.

Umm wow, I’ll get to the rest of your fascinating post later when I’ve had time to wrap my head around it, but quickly: remember how Lala told Jesus: “we may have more in common than I thought”. He said this JUST after Jesus told him he was the child of rape. Now look at this description of a cambion:
The cambion is a still birth that shows no sign of life outside of being alive, meaning that the child has, for example, no pulse and no breath. This continues until the child is about seven years old
emphasis mine.
Ruby Jean told Lala when he was five years old that he could ‘breathe’ underwater.
I’ve been wondering what kind of weirdness was associated with Lala and Tara’s absent fathers. Sounds like you’re on to something.
I agree Antonia will be Jesus’ mom. It’s almost inevitable.
Midnight Charm has suggested that Jesus is working for Bill. If this is the case, I’m not sure it’s of his free will
I agree, I do think he’s working for Bill against his will. Like Rene with Arlene, he seems like a basically decent fellow who cares about Lafayette. The scary thing is, Bill can only have one purpose in sending Jesus after Lala and that is to harness Lala’s magic. If Bill is really Compton he would most likely know Lala’s ancestors were conjureres, but even if he isn’t Compton he’s clearly done an awful lot of investigating and could have found out that way. IMO, he’s had many, many years to set up his appearance in Bon Temps and he had it all arranged ahead of time. First Rene, then MA, now Holly and Jesus have rolled into town in waves like an advancing army of minions to do his dirty work. Their exact purpose remains unclear at this time, but the terms ‘shock doctrine’ ‘softening the target’ come to mind with Rene and MA while Holly and Jesus–and probably yet another minion we haven’t met–have been sent in to help him deliver the final blow.
I meant to add that I hope Antonia extricates Jesus from Bill because this would mean Lala will be out from under the manipulations and can use his newfound knowledge of magic AGAINST Bill.
It’s hard to imagine why Antonia would have a 5 episode arch if there wasn’t something like this going on. This is not a woman who runs to her son with her troubles.
If Antonia is coming to save Jesus from Bill, she is Ruby Jean’s doppel since she came to BT to save Laffy from the witches, vampires, cats, and dogs. Also Jesus parallels Lala in that he’s working for a vampire and doesn’t have the option of quitting.
Jesus parallels Lala in another way He’s working for a vampire and doesn’t really have the option of quitting.
Exactly. It all fits together like a glove.
Thankfully, Antonia sounds like a no-nonsense woman who will know what’s what, magically speaking and otherwise. She can warn Lala and help teach him the ropes along with saving her son. It’s really, REALLY about time some of these characters are armed with some salient facts instead of wandering around in the dark while The Dark has not only approached, he’s HERE. And Lafayette is our guy.
This is really great! I can certainly believe that Antonia would come out of the woodwork now to save her son from certain doom. I need to think about this much more, but in order for Bill to have willed Jesus into his service, did he already have a relationship with his (possibly incubus) father? If not, how do you think he may have tracked him down and brought him to LA?
Also, if Bill has been after Lafayette for some time (to stop him before his magic could grow further and destroy his plan) why didn’t he just kill him the night Eric had him deliver Laffy to FT?
Yes, Eric would have been angry – but I doubt Eric told Bill the real reasons he wanted him (questioning about Eddie, Godric, etc.) Bill could have lied and made an excuse – he had a stake, or a silver baseball bat, lol….if Bill was supposed to think Laffy was just a run-of-the-mill V-dealing trash human, he could certainly scoff at the loss and say “Sorry, Eric – but he’s just a human.” This would actually have gone far in lessening Eric’s suspicions of Bill’s mainstreaming and odd devotion to Sookie, no?
One last thought – I totally LOVE the idea that Lafayette is a cambion. But if he had no pulse and didn’breathe, wouldn’t some school official have caught that at some point in elementary school? PE, physicals, scoliosis checks, etc….unless he was homeschooled. But who would have taken on that undertaking? The only other relative I think he’s mentioned (besides RJ, LM and Tara, natch) is that veterinarian uncle or cousin who he planned on calling after Ginger shot him.
Bill doesn’t want Laffy dead he wants to harness his powers. This is why Jesus kept push push pushing to ‘open doors’ to Laffy’s magic. Bill may have trapped Jesus into service in the same way he’s trying to trap Laffy, by using another witch to mold and direct his magic. How this actually works to press the witch into Bill’s service against their will I’m sure I do not know lol but it could have something to do with ‘binding’ spells. I’m quite certain Bill practices his own form of magic but he’s probably not as powerful as he wishes, so he ‘collects’ a stable of witches, ala his doppel RE, as reinfocement. Sort of like a coven of indentured witches? Something like that. Bill may even have a connection to Jesus’ black magic practicing Abuelo.
MC,
At first I was skeptical that Bill was collecting witches, but collecting people is exactly what SA, MA, and RE do.
How you describe Bill is very much like Propsero. He has the witch’s spell book, but still uses Caliban and the fairy Ariel to do his bidding.
Ah! I think I get it now. Thanks for explaining.
Still, though….if Laffy is a new “apprentice” witch, so to speak, wouldn’t Bill rather have one with more experience? Or are you saying that’s precisely WHY Bill wants him now – because that way he’s impressionable and can be molded to any devious plans Bill might have for him?
Sorry, MC – I don’t mean to be dense here. I think you’re saying that Bill has had Jesus testing out Laffy’s powers so that if they’re up to snuff he can take him and use him. Right? And he’s more likely to get the answers he needs by making Jesus out as the perfect gay, handsome, damaged enough to not be threatening pinch-hitter?
Hell, it worked with QSA, Bill and Sookie, lol – so why not? Yeah – I can get on board with this.
I’m sorry I somehow missed this comment.

Absolutely, this is what Bill has done with Sookie after all. He came in to seduce her using a persona that appealed to her in order to ‘test’ her blood and her powers so he could use them for personal gain. Does he want Lala’s powers ‘up to snuff’? IDK, I think it was a matter of opening doors first to see if HAD them to begin with. With Jesus in place ‘teaching’ him magic, he can also mold his magic and direct it towards the black arts to suit his own purposes. Lala would not even realize he’s being taught dark magic, like most of the audience did not recognize the signs that Holly was casting a dark spell with Arlene.
I think Bill must have aquired Jesus either through his father or grandfather.
You raise a good point about why Bill didn’t just kill Laffy, but if it’s a pattern with him to collect people like RE did, then he’d want someone to seduce Laffy and bring him over to the dark side.
Cambions aren’t supposed to show life until around 7. If this is the way they wanted to go with with Laffy, they could fudge the age to around when he would enter first grade.
Ok…..I was in school much earlier, so I forget that some kids/states start later. But what about infant pediatric visits? Unless RJ never took him because of her mental illness? What about his birth? Wouldn’t the docs have declared him stillborn?
Is there any blu-ray commentary on Lala’s childhood? Was he in the foster system at any point?
With Sookie being born on the dining room table and never havng blood drawn, God only knows how Lala spent his first few years.
I wouldn’t surprise me much, given RJ’s geographical location and socio-economic status, if Lala was born at home and never had a well-baby visit to a pediatrition.
It’d surprise me if he had one.
That’s another great post and I must say that I find your theory on Antonia much more convincing than my idea about Claudine’s mom and it would fit even more looking at the paralells. Also I think it was said that they were hoping Alfred Woodward would be available for S4 but as far as I understood she isn’t so maybe they needed Antonia to continue that arc.
I always felt it was odd that Jesus was looking after Ruby Jean. This could not have been a coincidence and esp. as he knows what he is, it’s really strange that he did not give any further thought to Ruby Jean’s warning to Laffy. So I think his job was to keep Laffy and Ruby Jean appart.
Actually I’ve never even heard about cambions before. Your site is really educating me.
I’m not sure if you saw my response yesterday to you. A lot of comments got buried really quickly.
I do think that if Claudine’s mom is going to turn up, this would be the episode for her to make her first appearance, and you idenified the perfect candidate.
I have to give Selle credit for coming up with cambions. I had no idea that incubi and succubi could produce offspring. The process is quite fascinating–an early version of artificial insemination.
Oh, I’m on it already. I have another idea on the fairies but still need to check if it was already discussed. I’m a newbie to all the speculations so I’m a bit slow to get across what I’m thinking.
Is it just me, or is there a lot of pink on/around these moms? Mrs. Hamby may not be wearing it, but she’s surrounded by it. The cherub on her shirt reminds me of one of Sookie’s nighties. (A pre-requisite wardrobe item for victims of spousal abuse?)
Also, besides her pink patterned clothing, the pillowcase LM is passed out on reminds me of the flowers at Sookie’s house from your Rambling Roses piece. And not only is RJ wearing that hot pink housedress, her robe has pink paisley edging. Melinda Mickens is wearing a blouse that has a pale pinkish hue (at least on my screen, lol.)
Methinks Antonia will be making her entrance in a similar tone.
That’s a lot of pink,
BillAlan.Pink or Rose? The roses on the clothes, the walls, the color worn by so many females, remember when Bill was served a blood bisque infused with rose petals? Call me crazy…
Sookie was told to leave the Hamby home so she wouldn’t have seen the result of Bill “fixing her mess”. I’m guessing here that the Hambys are hanging out with Stanley’s mom.
I’ll take any bet that Bill has been lurking around on and off around Bon Temps since the day he killed Caroline.
In the commentaries Lala explained how RJ and LM were famous in Shreveport for the morning after breakfasts? I bet jazzy musician Bill ran into the ladies…and served RJ breakfast himself.
Oh, no! Osterby, you had me until the end, but did you really need to go to Bill and RJ? That is more than I can take in the morning.
Lmao…sorry Renee. But think about it though. Lorena and Bill and their Ragtime gig in the 20′s. Bill at a Punk bar in the 80′s. How far a guess is it that he has been a performer in between? Jazz club, in Shreveport? Just sayin’ that Bill could have been there with RJ and LM.
And I doubt doubt it for one minute. It’s the plausibility that makes it so horrible.
Sookie was told to leave the Hamby home so she wouldn’t have seen the result of Bill “fixing her mess”. I’m guessing here that the Hambys are hanging out with Stanley’s mom.
As much as hate NOT to attribute another heinous murder to Bill
what keeps me from believing he killed them is that the Hamby’s deaths would be all over the news and Jess and Sookie would be bound to hear about it. Both of them have already seen the Hamby’s on tv and the deaths of the parents of a missing teen would be blaring breaking material, maybe even nationwide. Bill would want to avoid this so more likely he glamoured them to forget the visit and to drop their search for Jess.
*blaring breaking news material
The only thing that makes me believe the Hambys are still alive is Chip from last season who couldn’t wait to tell them the news that he found Jessica.
I think the debacle at the Hambys is the reason Bill has gotten rid of the both of Sookie’s tvs and probably the one at his house, too.
N3of s2 Jess and Sookie go to the Hambys because of what they saw on tv.
N4return from Fangtasia
N5 go to Dallas
Sookie’s televisions have been gone since they returned.
