This post was supposed to be a couple of sentences telling you to go checkout the updated post which predicted Sookie and Eric’s first meeting s3. I’m very excited about how closely the pattern from 2.01 played out and how many predictions came fairly close to the reality.
Then it turned into an essay because the elements of the scene that aren’t accounted for in that set of parallels, are from two other scenes. When I considered them, the relationship between 1.01, 2.01, and 3.01 fell into place.
The bondage and nudity in Eric and Sookie’s first meeting s3 parallels Jason’s first sex scene in 1.01 and the setting, in the dungeon, on the carousel, parallels Lafayette’s experience in 2.01.
The reason to bring those disparate scenes together in 3.01 with Eric having sex with Yvetta in the basement is because the episodes are structured on the tarot. Card 1 is the Magician. As pennyddreadful explained, “Among other things this card can represent the charlatan, the confidence artist, or any sort of manipulator. Charming, glib, and seemingly irresistible…his magic may be real or may simply be cheap sleight of hand illusion.”
This description fits Maudette, Jason’s sex partner in 1.01, Lafayette, a prisoner in 2.01, and Yvetta, Eric’s sex partner in 3.01. These three manipulators are identified as being the same archetype with the similarity of the last syllable of their names. Maudette lied to Jason and made him think he had killed her. Lafayette took advantage of Eddie and Jason, and, just as surely, Yvetta is conning Eric. The connection between the three is made stronger by the fact that Jason and Eddie are both alter egos of Eric.
So while Bill was playing the part of the master magician and manipulating Sookie into drinking his blood by nearly getting her killed in 1.01* and glamouring the audience into thinking that he didn’t kill Olivia in 3.01.** Eric and his primary alter ego, Jason, were being taken advantage of by the less practiced ‘magicians,’ Maudette and Yvetta.
In 2.01, with the discovery of Jessica’s creation and Uncle Bartlette’s murder, Sookie finally realized that Bill was a killer she couldn’t trust to be honest with her. Bill had to own up to his actions and appease Sookie with a display of angst, a romantic speech, and passionate sex. This is also the episode in which the ‘magician’ Lafayette had to atone for manipulating Jason and Eddie with a couple weeks in Eric’s dungeon.
So, to wrap this all up, be sure and check out the updated post in the first link and watch out for Yvetta, her trickery is going to get Eric into a world of trouble. I know that this will come as a surprise to no one, but it looks like she really is going to be a witch since she is identified with the Magician. On a side note, the hoodoo shrine in Lafayette’s living room indicates that he is a practitioner of that form of folk magic. I wonder if Maudette had anything in her place to indicate she practiced magic, too…
*This assumes Bill set Sookie up with the Rattrays.
**Based on Midnight Charm’s theory that Bill killed Olivia.
(Since the magicians are linked by their names, Theodore Newlin’s young exotic wife, Yvette, should be added to the group. There is no doubt that she was conning him, but her identification with the magician archetype may give an indication of how an evangelical ministry turned into a pagan sun worshiping cult.)
