I just found this over on Swedish Meatballs

janemllp:

‘Sancto Erico’, HBO TrueBlood Season 1, composed by Nathan Barr.

LYRICS (these translations are rough and may not be entirely correct).

English:
As Erik was dear to the chieftains and populace of the land, he was
elected king and installed honorably on the royal throne in Uppsala.
He traveled all over the country, and neither personal attachment nor gain,
neither fear nor animosity ever made him swerve from the path of justice.

Old Swedish (first two opening lines from an old poem):
Sithan Erik var kjaer allom landsins hoefdingjom ok allom allmogan, tha valdo the han til konungh ok sattis hetherlica a konunghks stool vith Upsala. Sidan foor han alt sit rike ok doemde raetta doma utan allan vinskap ella paenninghavild ok ey oraetta doma for raeddogha ella hat skuld

BACKGROUND

It has been suggested that there is links to King Erik IX though he is later than elected kings so it could also be Erik the holy = Sancto Erico or Erik Segersäll, the former because of his name and the latter because he was elected with strong support among the peasants.

Erik Segersäll (Erik the Victorious); Erik was born around 945 and had a wife named Aud (according to legend), while Eric Northman of the TV-series is 1000+ years old and in the books is stated to have had a wife named Aude.

Christ, I can’t believe there’s such a backstory to a song that was playing on an ipod that no one was really listening to since there was a Viking dude in a bathtub that needed to be gawked at.

But awesome.

It is really rather interesting though.  Sancto Erico?  Translation:  St Eric.  Seriously.  Do you think AB has a boner for Eric or what?Surprised

@ osterby

Maybe it's more like Nathan Barr since he wrote it.  Although, nothing is done without AB's approval, so you're probably right.

A lot of the credit should also go to CH I think. She came up with the character of Eric Northman that has some strong references to the real 'Eric' that actually lived in the 10th century.

But it's great to see (and hear) how they give as much attention on detail in the show as well. Makes me feel a little bit more hopeful about where AB is taking this…

@ osterby.  Ball wrote the lyrics?  Is there anything he can't do?

Reading the books I kinda got that CH tells us a lil indirectly that Eric is actually Leif Erikson. In the books he goes by Leafman not Northman. I love how she has historical figures thrown in there like with the Romanov members and of course Bubba aka Elvis

I read on Youtube that it is an old swedish epic poem that a university professor recommended to Alexander Woo. I don't know how reliable that is, though^^. But it seems more realistic than AB actually writing the lyrics himself. Does he know old swedish???

Hi Evarella, so nice to see you posting! More, please.

Actually, I don't think AB and Nathan Barr collaborated on Sancto Erico, but I do know for a fact that AB and Bruno Coon, TB's music editor, collaborated on the infamous 'Dig' ft. 'Bubba Kendall'. Which by the way, the song was initially credited  as 'Dig' by Headbone ft. Tense Young Man.

That's AB's voice on the track. I'm not sure if Bruno Coon wrote or arranged the music, but I don't hear any sampling. I could be wrong though. In any case, here's a couple of links talking about it but it doesn't seem they are very interested in taking any credit for it.

"“Dig” – “We wanted to use Tone-Loc’s “Wild Thing” but it was too expensive, so I wrote this song.” Mr. Ball sings his rendition of Dig at the end credits."

This article in Billboard tells the story of 'Dig' much better than the Billsbabe I linked. Under the Gary Calamar heading: Link  Headbone was Coon's band.

Jesus and I agreed to see other people, but that don't mean we don't still talk from time to time.
