OfflineI did kind of feel sorry for Sir Richard when he standing on the doorstep all sad and dejected after Mary broke their engagement.
I cheered! All I could think of was all the times the threatened Lady Mary. And the way he grabbed her arms, his temper….future abusive husband. I didn't feel sorry for him at all.
Absolutely osterby, but Matthew and Robert aren't exactly models of modernity. They're both all about 'good judgement', honor, restraint and so forth. I was speaking more to a sense of personal disappointment with Mary's actions, but we never saw that. Not that I'm judging her, but having a lover die in a woman's bed is a huge thing especially for the men in a family of that era. Recriminiations, at least! Temporary rejection! It just seemed they glossed over some really good potential drama. Robert reacted more dramatically to Sybil marrying Branson than he did over the Turkish gentleman's death in his daughters' bed, in flagrante delicto. His death has loomed over Mary this whole time, causing all sorts of issues. My issue with it is it seemed to resolve itself too quickly and neatly given the pall it's cast over her. It just.. fizzled on the personal level. Not that I would want or expect it to stay that way. Of course there is still the potential for Sir Richard to expose her in his newspapers, which will no doubt cause a lot of upheaval.

OnlineOh Yea, news about Downton Abbey.
I'm with you osterby. I felt no pity for Sir Richard at all. He was a controlling arse. It seems nouveau riche ,newly minted knighthoods are portrayed as more traditional than the ruling aristocracy. His remarks during the Servant's Ball were soooo gauche. I agree he did in Mrs. Bates 1.01. She was a scheming harpy. I figure he got tired of her threats.
I fuckin' love Jon Hamm.

Jon Hamm Says Billionaires Fighting Delayed 'Mad Men' Season 5 (VIDEO)
Clearly Jon Hamm isn't too concerned with upsetting powerful people, as evidenced by his latest appearance on "Late Show" (Weeknights, 11:35 p.m. EST on CBS). When asked by David Letterman to explain what he could about the lengthy break between the fourth and fifths seasons of "Mad Men," Hamm said, "I've described it thusly, and I got in trouble, so I'll do it again the same way."
According to Hamm, "When billionaires fight it takes a lot longer to settle. So we had some very wealthy people determining how long we would be off the air."
When Letterman asked if the scheduled premiere date for Season 5 was indicative of production being under way again with all problems solved, Hamm gave him one better. "We are back, finished with production," he said. "Season 5 is in the books."
I will be watching Golden Boy:
'Downton Abbey's' Mr. Pamuk replaces Ryan Phillippe in TV pilot

Theo James, the man who played Kemal Pamuk, Lady Mary Crawley's … momentary lapse in all of her senses on "Downton Abbey," has been cast in Greg Berlanti's CBS drama "Golden Boy," replacing the previously-cast Ryan Phillippe as the male lead, according to TV Line.
Phillippe has reportedly gotten cold feet and dropped out of the project, so James is stepping in as Walter William Clark, an ambitious young police office who becomes a hero after busting a major drug ring, and perhaps starts to rise a little too quickly within the department.
The executive producers of the show are Berlanti ("Brothers & Sisters," "Dirty Sexy Money") and Nicholas Wootton ("NYPD Blue"). The project also stars Chi McBride ("Boston Public," "Pushing Daisies") and Kevin Alejandro ("True Blood").
Do you think the US viewers are ready for the devastatingly handsome charms of Mr. Pamuk? Tally ho.
This is interesting..
'American Horror Story' Season 2: Angelina Jolie 'Girl, Interrupted'-type wanted
"American Horror Story" has started fleshing out its Season 2 characters and TV Line is reporting that a major nemesis for returning scene-stealer Jessica Lange is going to be patterned after Angelina Jolie's "Girl, Interrupted" character.
Lisa Rowe was Angelina's "Girl" character and her dangerous, brash nature got her in trouble in the mental institution where the movie took place. The casting notice for "AHS" says that Gia is a fierce, ferocious, extremely sexual and dangerous wild-child sexpot who harbors a secret. The second season of "AHS" is also going to take place in a "horror institution."
TV Line tosses out Adrianne Palicki as a castin gidea. We could also see the show bringing back Alexandra Breckenridge in the role. Or perhaps someone like "True Blood's" Evan Rachel Wood. Or maybe someone like Alexis Bledel, in a complete departure from how we're used to seeing her.
Who do you think would be good?
And just as an aside – do you suppose the fact that the character's name is Gia is a coincidence? (That was one of Angelina's earliest roles, for those of you keeping score at home.)
Strangely, TB is also going to a 'horror institution' this upcoming season. There was also a character last season–Alexandra Breckinride, TB's Katerina–who could mask her true physical persona. Calvin Norris played a cop, and of course DO'H..
Tonight's the night!
Predicting where 'Mad Men' might pick up in season 5

York, PA – Gin and ice rattle in a martini shaker.
The bartender pours his concoction into a glass and slides it toward a suit, who doesn't know whether it's bitter, sweet, dirty or sour.
Sunday night, that bartender is writer/creator Matthew Weiner. The martini, the season five premiere of his AMC TV series "Mad Men."
The suit or skirt hunched over the bar is the audience, thirsty for tonight's two-hour premiere titled "A Little Kiss."
After "Mad Men's" season four finale aired Oct. 17, 2010, the show went on an extended hiatus, leaving fans with little to do but watch reruns and speculate about what's to come. Weiner carefully guards scripts, so there have been few clues about season five.
Here is what the audience does know:
The season four finale left characters hurtling toward 1966. And the white-male-dominated world of the mad men — New York City advertising executives — is falling to pieces.
The new season will most likely include the usual mixers — impeccable style, unexpected plot twists and meticulous attention to period details. But one of the most important ingredients — the time element — remains a mystery.
It's time to pour "Mad Men" mocktails to predict possible season five plot points.
Drink No. 1: The show's fifth season picks up in early 1966.
Jan. 1: By law, all U.S. cigarette packs have to carry the warning: "Caution! Cigarette smoking may be hazardous to your health."
Jan. 1 to 12: Bus and subway service shuts down in New York City for 12 days when unionized employees strike.
April: The Uniform Time Act of 1966 set Daylight Saving Time to begin on the last Sunday of April.
March: In an interview with a London paper, John Lennon compares The Beatles to Jesus; World Trade Center construction begins.
June 30: The National Organization for Women (NOW) is established in Washington, D.C.
Sept. 16: The new Metropolitan Opera House at Lincoln Center in New York opens with the opera "Antony and Cleopatra."
July 25: Poet Frank O'Hara is killed in a dune buggy accident on Fire Island, New York.
Nov. 8: Former actor Ronald Reagan is elected governor of California.
Dec. 15: Walt Disney dies.
End of the year: American forces in Vietnam reach 385,000 men, plus 60,000 sailors stationed offshore. More than 6,000 Americans have been killed this year and 30,000 have been wounded.

Drink No. 2: The show skips 1966 and the fifth season starts in 1967.
Jan. 27: Three astronauts are killed after their Apollo spacecraft catches fire during a launch simulation.
March 29: The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA) call the union's first national strike. It lasts 13 days and affects 100 locations across the country. An agreement is reached right before the Academy Awards broadcast.
April 9: The first Boeing 737 (100 series) takes its maiden flight.
April 15: Spring Mobilization to End the War starts. More than 400,000 march in protest of the Vietnam War from Central Park in New York to the United Nations building. Protests occur in San Francisco and other U.S. cities throughout the year.
Summer: Race riots break out in Newark, N.J.; Detroit; Milwaukee; Minneapolis; Washington, D.C; and other U.S. cities. Thousands of young people flock to San Francisco's Haight Ashbury district to join the hippie movement.
Nov. 29: U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara announces his resignation after President Lyndon B. Johnson rejects his proposal earlier that month to freeze troop levels, stop bombing North Vietnam and hand over ground fighting to South Vietnam.
Dec. 12: "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner," a movie about an interracial relationship, is released. It stars Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn, who wins an Oscar for her role in the film, and Spencer Tracy, who died six months before the film's release.

First off, I wanted to say I am enjoying the hell out of Mad Men AND The Killing. I don't care what the critics say about The Killing I am enthralled with the threads and nuances.
Second, The Grand sounds awesome. It stars Stephen Moyer and is on Netflix Instant. The kids are gone for the weekend and Imma have myself a marathon:
If You Love 'Downton Abbey' and Hotels, You Must See 'The Grand'
We have a few questions for you. 1: Do you like Downton Abbey? 2: Have you seen all the episodes? 3: Are you looking for another similar show to replace it or even supplement it?
If you answered yes to at least two of those questions, then fire up the Netflix because Instant Streaming has the entire two seasons of a British period drama set just after World War I which have all the upstairs-downstairs drama of Downton and more. It's called The Grand, it came out in 1997-1998, and it all takes place in a hotel. SCORE.
Here's how imdb begins to explain the plot:
At the end of World War I, the Bannerman family re-opens the Grand Hotel after a lengthy closure and a costly re-furbishing. The hotel has been in the family for a long time and George Bannerman and his wife Sarah desperately want to make a go of it. Their son Stephen has returned from the wars without any physical harm but still suffers from the mental anguish of seeing so many of his comrades-in-arms falling on the battlefield.
…And there you have the first five minutes of the 18-episode series.
We laughed, we cried, we became extremely thankful that the workings of hotels today have changed so much from back then. If you're employed in hospitality, you'll probably get sucked into series quicksharp and see what we mean. We devoured the series in three days. Perhaps you can do better.
Fun fact: the series stars dashing actor Stephen Moyer in the role of the son, also named Stephen. You may know Mr. Moyer better now as the sympathetic vampire Bill Compton on HBO's True Blood. He was replaced by another actor in the role of Stephen about halfway through the complete series of The Grand, which explains why we totally felt like the character had somehow lost his hotness.

"Sympathetic" Bill Compton bothers the shit out of me, though. Stop it! Just stop it! ![]()

Online@sunny
That show The Grand sounds interesting. I'll have to give it a shot. I'm a sucker for costume dramas.
On another note…..I watched part of Straw Dogs last night, up until Charlie starts to rape the young woman. That ended it for me. I couldn't watch the rest of it. AS really played a very good bad guy. There was not a smidge of Eric in the character Charlie. I found him totally unlikable. I'm not even tempted to watch the rest of it.
I will say this much, he commands the screen when he is in a scene.
Not my thing either. The only way I will ever see it is if my husband decides to watch it while I'm in the room. He's big on Alien invasions.
Although, I did see a truly original alien invasion movie the other day. Please watch 'Attack the Block' forthwith!!
Well, this fucking sucks if it's true:
News
A report in the Daily Mail claims that Maggie Smith has asked to be written out of Downton Abbey. You might want to view this story with the kind of cynicism you'd normally use after hearing the words "the Daily Mail claims," but maybe we're at one of those times when the stopped clock is right.
