I recall the discussions that we had at TBU when it was recommended by AB.  There were differing opinions about the love story aspect.

************Movie Spoiler*******************

I too feel that the subtext implied that the vampire was a parasite.  He/she sucked that poor kid in to become her next PROCURER when the old one proved unreliable.  That child was doomed to supply the vampire with blood.

In Let the Right One In it looked as if the child could have been a castrato.

The child vampire in the movie was a boy.  That one scene showed where his penis had been cut off.  Although I can  totally buy that fact that shim present shim-self as what ever it needed to be to snagg Oscar.  But I also don't think that the boy could have been much of a procurer.  Also the movie didn't show the blood bond/ exchanges like TB does so it's not exactly the same as the hold bill has over Sookie.

Have only seen the American remake but even in that there was no need to introduce any other supernatural influencing factors. The psychological ones used were chilling enough.

The poor boy already felt isolated, even from his mother. Hinted at by always showing him alone and only ever showing parts of his mother (a quick shot of her hands etc).

Due to his circumstances he was ripe for grooming and that's exactly what happened to him. He was befriended then cut loose to make him feel like he was at fault and to see if he came running. He felt complicit in the death of the policeman when he walked away and was totally traumatized by the pool incident.

He was left feeling he had nowhere else to turn. The part where the older man asked for Oscar to be left alone summed up the lifetime of misery that was ahead of Oscar. The fear he showed when asking and the blind loyalty when killing himself to protect the child vampire were both obtained through a lifetime of isolation and psychological brow beating into complicity and eventual active participation (as was shown).

The film definitely left you with the sense that Oscar would learn to procure quickly or face the consequences, which would probably involve a range of tactics from guilt tripping, berating, ostracism, through to possible violence. All presented as his own fault for not being able to adequately protect his friend. I also felt there were parallels with internet grooming and the like,  especially with the whole monster behind the innocent seeming child persona.

A definite parasitic relationship.

@wahoozit–"Have only seen the American remake but even in that there was no need to introduce any other supernatural influencing factors. The psychological ones used were chilling enough."

Totally agreed. This is the case with Bill and Sookie as well.

"Due to his circumstances he was ripe for grooming and that's exactly what happened to him. He was befriended then cut lose to make him feel like he was at fault and to see if he came running. He felt complicit in the death of the policeman when he walked away and was totally traumatized by the pool incident."

Again, just like Bill and Sookie. He groomed her into the compliant doll she is now, and all along the way he slowly but surely dragged her down to his level by making her feel complicit in his acts of violence, particularly the murder of UB.

"The film definitely left you with the sense that Oscar would learn to procure quickly or face the consequences, which would probably involve a range of tactics from guilt tripping, berating, ostracism, through to possible violence."

Indeed, Sookie has been taught time and again via Bill's violent reactions [in the car after the visit to Jessica's parents, the truck draining] that it is not a good idea to cross him. The guilt tripping ['You are mah miracle'] and berating ['You undermined mah authoritah'] are also favored tactics.

I had never see Let the Right One In before.  I found that Amazon has many free movies you can stream to your computer and they are free for "Prime" members, so I watched it there last night.  I can see why Alan Ball recommended TB viewers watch it. It does parallel perfectly.

The castrato.  He reminded me of a book that Anne Rice wrote called Cry to Heaven.  It was the story of a castrato.  (It's a good book if you haven't read it.)  http://www.amazon.com/Cry-Heav…..038;sr=1-1

See now again I have to defend this movie…lol, we all have our crosses to bear.  I have said on TBU (True Blood University,  I have graduated with honors)  that I liked it.  I can see and probably had I watched the movie in a different mood.  I can understand the parasitic nature of the two.  However I just saw a friendship between two wounded souls.  I think maybe Ball recommended it because it was in the genre.  I don't see Bill and Sookie in Eli and Oscar.  I see Eli and Oscar.  However it's a doomed friendship to say the least.

Actually this brings to mind the early mid season 1 of TB.  After Gran died, Sookie and Tara had a fight and Sookie yelled out that she was all alone.  How can she say that?  She had Tara, Lala, and Sam.  Jason was going to come around or at least go back to being the brother he was.  Did he start messing around in her mind earlier than I thought?  I know that's off topic.

Eileen in Brooklyn: Anything you can tease about True Blood, like who is Sookie going to choose, Bill or Eric?
How about…neither? "We call it season of the bromance," sexy star Alexander Skarsgård told us at a presser for his new movie Battleship. "We just started [filming] and we're on episode four of season five. I have a lot with Steve [Stephen Moyer] this year," he said, quipping, "Eric is very intrigued by Bill now." Honestly, we're Team Eric no matter whom he hooks up with (especially if he's nekkid)! TV's Top Couple round two, y'all?

Well can you blame Eric? Demon-summoning svengalis are very intriguing.

Joe Bob ?????

Here’s a new spoiler from EOnline in an answer to another question about True Blood.

Gail in Canton, OhioLove all the True Blood spoilers you’ve been giving us! Any more?
Vampires will have something else to fear besides werewolves, the sun and silver in the upcoming season of True Blood. This new dude is way, way worse. He’s…a redneck. And an anti-vampire one at that. This hunter will be a recurring character on T.B.’s new season, so he’ll likely be raising all kinds of hell, like killing vamps and taking others prisoner. Want to hear the best part? His name is…wait for it…Joe Bob. You’re welcome.

I guess Joe Bob is the one holding the vamps in padded cells?

Well, that's interesting.  Good vamp?  Bad vamp?  In the books Eric's maker was a Roman, in the Roman Empire sense, Apius Ocella something.

He was a baaaaad vamp.  So CM will be just Roman.  With the addition of young Alexander, also a character from the books, progeny of Apius, brother to Eric, this doesn't sound promising.

If S5 is partly about the politics of the VA then it could also be a nod to the Roman Empire. I think there was a discussion once that touched on what kind of political system vampires would set up in the "New World".

Oh my goodness though ya'll. Don't put it past AB to make Roman Eric's real maker, and the maker of the child Alexander. Remember last year how Daisy's character name changed into Katerina? That boy could turn into Alexei in the twinkling of an eye.

The kid looks like Alexander Skarsgard, so hell, how do we know he wasn't Eric's human child? The beautiful boy Coby and that look Eric gave him..

If this is true, Eric would be ashamed of his real maker. He would hate him and oppose him. He would want his true death. Therefore, he lied about Godric to Sookie? Maybe he and Godric were abused broder's  who relied upon each other. Or maybe Godric is his maker but Roman's power would reach down to Eric. A parallel would be Tara's prospective grandparent and the power he holds–will it be Bill, through Jessica, or will Eric become the grandad via Pam? We know neither Bill nor Eric can do it personally because their circumstances are too dire. They can't hang around and make themselves vulnerable like that.

Godric killed his own maker according to the arcana right?  Could this be a sibling of Godric's?

We may be jumping the gun on a relationship to Eric.  AB has a way of standing book established characters on their heads etc.
