Yes AQ!  We are constructing the show in terms of our own socially defined terms.  we have so internalized our expectations for behavior and have been conditioned (Like a Pavlov dog) that we don't see anymore.  This has happened to both Sookie and Tara.  Tara is even more pronounced because of the wide spread hatred of her character.  People have been so conditioned to feel sorry to the ABUSER , for the mega companies, for the ultra rich that we don't even notice when they harm us.  We thank them for keeping us employed.  We ostracize those that dare to go against the machine.  It's crazy. Do we even think about how much abuse someone takes before they say enough!  Wow.  It blows my mind.

Welcome AQ!!!!

hi Jerron! you are so right, imo-about the social conditioning and defined terms! these have been served up by a "lame-stream" media which is owned by the elites (david rockefeller THANKING the press for their cooperation in keeping the bilderberger meetings on the down-low all these years)…and Tara-couldn't agree MORE! Tara-the Sookie-doppel who speaks the "in-your-face-i-dare-you-to-even-try-to-defend-this" truth! another example of what happens to those who dare to call attention to and not shy away from the TRUTH of the atrocities which are right in front of us: the back of her head getting blown up: JFK assassination, anyone…and like Tara, I keep waiting for Sookie (our nation, the audience) to Wake The F*CK UP!…Yell

Knowledge and people's conception (and belief) of what reality is becomes embedded in the institutional fabric of society. Reality is therefore said to be socially constructed.

I think Bill is trying to create his own universe/reality and is training Bon Temps to fit this theory.

re-reading this brought to mind one of Nan's quotes (i think it was the Bill Maher interview) "we just want to want to be part of main stream society"

thinking of that and the "end-game" of the elite-which is to rule the world, without being questioned or challenged. and Bill- "training Bon Temps" would be glimpse into what is happening simultaneously around the globe.

i said all that to say this, could "V" be a metaphor for television/mass media?  probably sounds crazy, right? just sort of throwing it out there…("you take this in-and you take in a little of the vampire it came from")  we're all meant to "pick up what they're puttin' down"

Hello angiequinn and welcome.

@angie -….could "V" be a metaphor for television/mass media?  probably sounds crazy, right? just sort of throwing it out there…("you take this in-and you take in a little of the vampire it came from")  we're all meant to "pick up what they're puttin' down"

I can't disagree with that and it doesn't sound crazy at all to me.  I've long railed against the crap that is most of TV today.

Heck, even the news isn't news anymore, peppered the way it is with "celebrity" doings and undoings.  Those kinds of items get more press than what's happening around the world.

Well, V is a mind-altering drug and so is television. But V is also a metaphor for actual 'pharmaceuticals', psychotropics used to mind control the population. AND it is a direct metaphor for entheogens used by Shaman's like Lala.

A psychoactive drug, psychopharmaceutical, or psychotropic is a chemical substance that crosses the blood–brain barrier and acts primarily upon the central nervous system where it affects brain function, resulting in changes in perception, mood, consciousness, cognition, and behavior.[1] These substances may be used recreationally, to purposefully alter one's consciousness, as entheogens, for ritual, spiritual, and/or shamanic purposes, as a tool for studying or augmenting the mind, or therapeutically as medication.

It all depends on how it's used. It also depends on how the user 'rides' the V. 'The blood can lie' but it can also tell the truth if you know how to look for it.

hi bobsgran! thanks much for the welcome  Laugh  i totally agree with you about the media. it's like trying to find your way through a maze just to make some sense of what passes for "news"…the anchor comes on and says "good evening" and then proceeds to tell me all the reasons why it's not Yell

@sunny-"'The blood can lie' but it can also tell the truth if you know how to look for it."…and therein lies the rub-well, for me, anywayConfused

Don't allow it to be a rub. Double-check every fact. QUESTION EVERYTHING, even the stuff that seems like 'common knowledge' or 'conventional wisdom'. Maybe ESPECIALLY question those things.

solid advice sunny…between you, osterby, BG, jerron, exit-and too many others here to name-have realized that it's not so much the ANSWERS but instead coming to the understanding that you start where you are…wherever that may be. sometimes we don't realize how much we don't know…and if you don't know that you don't know-how then do you ask the question? You start where you are RIGHT now, and make a beginning. so why not start with a universe and a story that i truly enjoy-and individuals who have such interesting and insightful perspectives. change your perspective-change your view, and maybe, just maybe-answers to a question you didn't know you should be asking.

Exactly Angie.  We all come with different perspectives.  We all have a different frame of reference.  What makes this site and TBU unique is we all learn, and everyone's opinion and thoughts are regarded as relevant to the analysis of TB and the books.  Opinions are not like assholes 'round here.  We all have open minds.

Check this out ya'll. Season 3 cast photo supports the fourth wall theory and I never even realized it:

Bill, Sookie, Eric are each breaking the fourth wall by looking directly at the viewer while the other characters STAY in character by contemplating each other. Tara is the only one who is ambiguous..she COULD be looking at us over her shoulder but she could also be lost in thought..Tara presented us with the truck draining scene.

Of course, Sookie and Eric stare at us straight on while Bill is giving us the side-eye. As ever, half of him is obscured.

Thanks anna!

Thinking further, Bill is obscured because he's forcefully holding something in front of him. A deliberate obscuring. If we'd only gotten to see half of him by s3, does the theory bear out in season 4's cast photo?

Yep.

Only Bill and Sookie are breaking the fourth wall, which I think bears out the theory that we only saw their narratives last season. Fully HALF of Bill and  Alcide are hidden from the viewer—you can't see Bill's legs or his entire back and hip plus part of his upper arm is  hidden by Alcide's head  placed directly over Bill's MUSCLE. Fully the entire lower half of Alcide's body is hidden by a mysterious shadow. Only bits and pieces of E/S are in shadow or behind a body part. Sookie less so than Eric. We now fully see her for the damaged girl she is but we can't. quite. grasp why she's like that, though we have our suspicions. Which means it's the same for Sookie. B/S are both kind of giving us the side-eye.

Speaking of Alcide's 'head' space over Bill's 'muscle', notice how the the blood is dripping right down on Alcide. It's the only drip, very large.

I still think the first 22 minutes or so of Spellbound were told by an omniscient narrator. In the linked piece I discuss him thusly:

I was delighted to see this reenactment but little did I know that this lovely moment foreshadowed what was to come. For one brief shining moment the rot was stripped away and we were allowed to bask in the glorious, disinfecting light of truth. At the moment, the narrator who gave us this gift is anonymous and his reign was short but boy did he make it count.

Because of our generous benefactor we learn a shocking truth with far reaching implications. A series of vicious lies unravel so quickly on so many levels that if you blinked you might miss it.

~~

Not only did the omniscient narrator give us a truthful reenactment of the bullet sucking, but he recalled to our minds the circumstances of Gran's murder via Bucky and his oddly reminiscent pool of blood, and he also showed us unequivocally that Bill is immune to silver.

Who was he? 'The Author' of the play. Eric's cast photo bears out that he didn't have a chance to tell his side of the story. Isn't it amazing he still came off so adorable and lovely? When he realized his shit wasn't working, Bill resorted to humiliating Eric. He metaphorically made Eric stick his tongue up his ass. Yell

In the books the narrative is Sookie's and it develops according to her experiences, on TB it could be more about who is influencing her narrative and to what ends.

In the other cast photos Lala and Jessica are looking straight to camera.

Ok then, we might be able to pinpoint the first minutes of Spellbound as coming from either of them as well. I can't think of any other obvious switches in pov. Jessica seems the most obvious suspect from what I can remember of the surrounding scenes but I'm not sure her character is supposed to have the necessary knowledge to reenact Gran's murder and the bullet sucking. On second thought, maybe she's peeked in on some of Bill's dreams with Sookie, or perhaps he's shared with her more than we thought, and this is Jessica's way of revealing truths without spelling it out. That would go for her subliminally noticing his odd lack of silver burns as well. AND that statue of the Angel that crossed our eyeline in the shot of Jason running to her rescue could conceivably be Jessica's view of him. Certainly it would be at that moment.
