Does this picture of Jason Stackhouse remind you of anyone?
How about Eric, frustrated in his attempts to see Sookie because Bill refuses to return his texts?
Let’s replay the conversation between Jason and Hoyt before Summer arrives.
Jason: Just got all of these questions spinning around in my head. I don’t know what to do with them.
Hoyt: Like?
Jason: Like, why is it that I barely know her but I already love her? And who the fuck is that dick she’s living with? And why would someone like her put up with that shit? And also, do you think she was named after the champainge cause I think she was.
Hoyt: J, she’s from Hotshot. She’s probably named after that drug that keeps the whole town afloat.
Jason: No, no way.
Hoyt: I bet you a hundred to one her middle name is meth.
Jason: You’re a Christian Hoyt. Ain’t cool to judge.
Hoyt: I know. I’m sorry. I’m just trying to snap you out of it. That’s all.
Jason: I appreciate it, but it ain’t gonna work.
Hoyt: Hey, you remember that dealer that you took down last week at the bust?
Jason: I just told you, it ain’t gonna work. Reminding me of last week’s glory, ain’t gonna change the fact that this week hasn’t done shit for me yet.
Hoyt: Well, you think they still got him down at the jail?
Jason: I think so, yeah.
Hoyt: Well, why don’t you go down there and talk to him. He’s probably the best shot you got at getting some answers and he’s just stitting down at the jail locked up waiting for you.
Jason: That’s genius is what that is.
Let’s imagine a conversation similar to Jason and Hoyt’s taking place between Eric and Pam.
Eric: I’ve got all of these questions spinning around in my head.
Pam: Like?
Eric: Like, why is it that I’ve only met her once but she’s captured my interest? And why the fuck is she with that dick Bill Compton? Why would someone like her put up with that shit? I bet she tastes sweet. Do you think that’s why she’s named, Sookie, after the song ‘Groove Me’ by King Floyd* or the Spanish azucar?
Pam: Eric, she’s from Bon Temps. She’s probably named after the cows and the pigs.
Eric: No, no way.
Pam: I bet you a bottle of Royal she is. Her middle name is probably Sooeeee.
Eric: Enough Pam.
Pam: I’m sorry. I’m just trying to snap you out of it. That’s all.
Eric: I appreciate it, but it’s not going to work.
In ‘Hitting the Ground’ Hoyt goes on to suggest that Jason talk to Crystal’s strung out cousin who happens to be at Jason’s workplace to find out information about her and her no good fiancé.
Could Pam have done something similar the night a strung out Jason walked into Eric’s bar looking for V? Certainly Pam would have brought him to Eric’s attention for being a bloodhead in search of a fix, if not for his relationship to Sookie. Jason doesn’t have a memory of being summoned to Eric and questioned, but as Bud Deerborn says, vampires are crafty. Eric would have wiped his memory after Jason revealed everything he knew about Lafayette, Bill, and Sookie. This would explain how Eric knew that Lafayette was dealing V and that he could be used as leverage against Sookie.
Groove Me by King Floyd*
Uhh! Awww, sookie sookie now!
Hey! Oww, uhh! Come on, baby!
Hey there, Sugar Darlin’,
Let me tell you something
Girl, I’ve been trying to say, now.
You look so sweet,
And you’re so doggone fine.
I just can’t get you out of my mind.
You’ve become a sweet taste in my mouth, now.
And I want you to be my spouse,
So that we can live happily, nah-nah,
In a great big ol’ roomy house.
And I know you’re gonna groove me, baby.
Ahh, yeah, now.
You make me feel good inside.
Come on, and groove me, baby.
I need you to groove me.
Ahhh, yeah, now, now, darling.
Uhh! Come on, come on!
Hey! Uhh!
Hey there, Sugar Darlin’,
Come on, give me something
Girl, I’ve been needing for days.
Yes, I’m good, good loving,
With plenty, plenty hugging.
Ooh, you cute little thang, you.
Girl, between you and me, nah-nah,
We don’t need no company.
No other man, no other girl
Can enter into our world,
Not as long as you groove me, baby.
Ahh, come on.
Make me feel good inside.
Come on and groove me, baby.
Move me, baby.
Ahh, sock it to me, mama.
Uhh! Ahh, I like it like that, baby.
Uhh! Groove me, baby! Hey! Uhh!
Groove me, darling!
Come on, come on.
I need you to sock it to me, mama.
Come on and groove me, baby.
Hey! Uhh! Good, God!
It makes me feel so good inside, mama.
Now, come on, come on, and uhh,
Groove me, baby, groove me, baby.
Ahh, sock it to me,
Sock it to me,
Rock it to me.
Come on, come on!
Come on!
And uhh,
Groove me, mama, I want you to
Groove me!
This post was supposed to be a couple of sentences telling you to go checkout the updated post which predicted Sookie and Eric’s first meeting s3. I’m very excited about how closely the pattern from 2.01 played out and how many predictions came fairly close to the reality.
Then it turned into an essay because the elements of the scene that aren’t accounted for in that set of parallels, are from two other scenes. When I considered them, the relationship between 1.01, 2.01, and 3.01 fell into place.
The bondage and nudity in Eric and Sookie’s first meeting s3 parallels Jason’s first sex scene in 1.01 and the setting, in the dungeon, on the carousel, parallels Lafayette’s experience in 2.01.
The reason to bring those disparate scenes together in 3.01 with Eric having sex with Yvetta in the basement is because the episodes are structured on the tarot. Card 1 is the Magician. As pennyddreadful explained, “Among other things this card can represent the charlatan, the confidence artist, or any sort of manipulator. Charming, glib, and seemingly irresistible…his magic may be real or may simply be cheap sleight of hand illusion.”
This description fits Maudette, Jason’s sex partner in 1.01, Lafayette, a prisoner in 2.01, and Yvetta, Eric’s sex partner in 3.01. These three manipulators are identified as being the same archetype with the similarity of the last syllable of their names. Maudette lied to Jason and made him think he had killed her. Lafayette took advantage of Eddie and Jason, and, just as surely, Yvetta is conning Eric. The connection between the three is made stronger by the fact that Jason and Eddie are both alter egos of Eric.
So while Bill was playing the part of the master magician and manipulating Sookie into drinking his blood by nearly getting her killed in 1.01* and glamouring the audience into thinking that he didn’t kill Olivia in 3.01.** Eric and his primary alter ego, Jason, were being taken advantage of by the less practiced ‘magicians,’ Maudette and Yvetta.
In 2.01, with the discovery of Jessica’s creation and Uncle Bartlette’s murder, Sookie finally realized that Bill was a killer she couldn’t trust to be honest with her. Bill had to own up to his actions and appease Sookie with a display of angst, a romantic speech, and passionate sex. This is also the episode in which the ‘magician’ Lafayette had to atone for manipulating Jason and Eddie with a couple weeks in Eric’s dungeon.
So, to wrap this all up, be sure and check out the updated post in the first link and watch out for Yvetta, her trickery is going to get Eric into a world of trouble. I know that this will come as a surprise to no one, but it looks like she really is going to be a witch since she is identified with the Magician. On a side note, the hoodoo shrine in Lafayette’s living room indicates that he is a practitioner of that form of folk magic. I wonder if Maudette had anything in her place to indicate she practiced magic, too…
*This assumes Bill set Sookie up with the Rattrays.
**Based on Midnight Charm’s theory that Bill killed Olivia.
(Since the magicians are linked by their names, Theodore Newlin’s young exotic wife, Yvette, should be added to the group. There is no doubt that she was conning him, but her identification with the magician archetype may give an indication of how an evangelical ministry turned into a pagan sun worshiping cult.)
Why is Sophie Anne obsessed with light and water
to the point of setting her palace in an artificial lagoon,
decorating it throughout with a marine motif,
surrounding herself with the remains of sea creatures,
and lighting it with skylights
and dioramas that allow her to imagine she’s spending a sunny day at the seashore?
Could it have something to do with the reason that Sookie and Jason’s parents were killed in a flash flood or why Sookie will find Hunter in distress at an aquarium in season 3?
Could Sophie Anne have been part water fairy before she was made vampire?
Could that special fairy spark that Niall sees in Sookie be what provides Sophie Ann with her great wealth of knowledge that is far beyond what would be expected of a 500 year old vampire?
Is it the same thing that Amy recognized in Jason when she told him that there was something old and wise inside him?
If Russell Edington’s owes part of his position as King of Mississippi to his ability to command a gang of V addicted Weres, could Sophie Anne’s high status in the vampire world be in part due to a retinue who have fairy powers? Since we know that one of those powers is telepathy, can we assume that Sophie Anne is a telepath?
In the novels, Sophie Anne’s special gift was the ability to communicate with her children telepathically. As Sookie and Barry’s experiences have shown, that requires two telepaths. If Sophie Anne is one, does she make a habit of searching out others like her? With the difficulty of finding such valuable resources, would Sophie Anne be content to watch them age and die in the short span of a human life or would she make them her children?
Since none of Sophie Anne’s children from the books have been seen on True Blood, could Sophie Anne have lost them during the devastation of Hurricane Katrina? The levees broke in the morning when the vampires would have been at their rest. They could have been inadvertently exposed to sun light.
If Sophie Anne needs to rebuild her coterie, is she distributing V in order to locate humans with fairy ancestry?
If it had been Sophie Anne’s blood that kindled Jason’s fairy spark, she would have felt it and been able to locate him.
Is that how the drug addicted Hadley wound up at court, and is her fairy blood the reason she’s one of the queen’s favorites? It certainly isn’t due to her beauty, brains, or sparkling personality.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings
A free bird leaps on the back of the wind
and floats downstream till the current ends
and dips his wing in the orange suns rays and dares to claim the sky.
But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage
can seldom see through his bars of rage
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.
The free bird thinks of another breeze
and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees
and the fat worms waiting on a dawn-bright lawn and he names the sky his own.
But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams
his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream
his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.
The caged bird sings with a fearful trill
of things unknown but longed for still
and his tune is heard on the distant hill
for the caged bird sings of freedom.
Maya Angelou
If you thought the only Greek mythology in True Blood was connected to maenads, here’s an eye opener. This is Aurora, Goddess of the Dawn. She’s getting ready for work as her aging husband gazes on. In some accounts, her job is to drive her chariot through the night sky carrying a pink torch that heralds in the new day. In others, she just pulls back the drapes in her palace and the pink light from inside spills out and lights up the night sky.
Remember that scene in season one when Dawn is getting ready for work, and Jason is tied to her bed? Aurora and Tithonus. He was a heroic prince of Troy. They fell passionately in love and married. When Aurora begged Zeus to grant immortality to her husband she forgot to ask for eternal youth as well. As a result, Tithonus couldn’t die but continued to age and grow ever more feeble until he lost the use of his limbs. Aurora kept him prisoner in her room until she finally turned him into a grasshopper. Tithonus is used in art and literature to symbolize passion untempered by reason and faded glory. Doesn’t that sound like a certain Stackhouse we know?
Notice the muted green backgrounds in both images. What is Dawn doing with plain white sheets if they are not meant to mimic the clouds that pillow Tithonus? Then there are Dawn’s tragically 80′s rose chintz sofa pillows that look like they came right out of Mura’s painting.
Another connection to the myth is the grasshoppers heard outside Dawn’s house when Jason shows up on her doorstep in the middle of the night. They’re still chirping the next morning when an outside view of the house shows so much light pouring from the windows that they glow, outshining the daytime sun. The kicker? When Jason complains about being stuck in bed all day, Dawn alludes to Tithonus by retorting that he should be honored since she doesn’t tie just any old man to her bed. The sound of Dawn’s car pulling away tells us that she is off to light up the day of every good ole boy who walks into Merlotte’s.

*Midnight Charm’s Predictions
Revised and Updated 8/15/10
True Blood is blessed with two charismatic blond alpha males. One is human, the other vampire. Both are the desire of all women and the envy of all men. They are lovers and fighters and rock stars in their little worlds of Bon Temps and Fangtasia. They don’t hide or make excuses for what they are. As Amy said, “With Jason, it’s all on the surface,” and Sookie will eventually learn the same could be said of Eric because these two characters are doppelgangers or doubles.
The connection between Jason and Eric is established early in season 1 when we see them each at work. Jason is introduced first as the foreman of a road crew. He wears a yellow and orange safety vest over his bare chest, a nod to Eric’s first appearance in Dead Until Dark when he wore a leather vest without a shirt underneath when he met Sookie.
Jason is isolated from his workers. As they toil in the sweltering sun, he finds as much comfort as possible in the shade. He relaxes in a folding chair lined with a towel, oblivious to his crew. He’s on the phone trying to keep his mind off the murder he thinks he committed.
Jason is attempting to make a date with Merlotte’s waitress Dawn Green. Although it is clear that she intends to go out with him, Dawn plays hard to get and makes him work for the privilege. Before Jason can close the deal though, the police interrupt their conversation. Bud and Andy want to question Jason. He promises to call Dawn back.
When Eric is introduced three episodes later, an eerily similar scene is played out at Fangtasia. He sprawls under the spotlights in an antique fur lined chair to keep himself warm in the cold dark club, a reverse image of Jason’s summer environment with its bright sunshine and relentless heat. Eric’s inhuman stillness is also a counterpoint to Jason’s animated features. The alienation between worker and boss that was depicted on the road crew is repeated at Fangtasia. Eric sits isolated on a dais and ignores all but his second in command, Pam. Similarly, Jason only interacted with his second, René.
When Eric develops an interest in another waitress from Merlotte’s we might expect a flirtation to parallel the one that Jason had on the phone with Dawn, but the roles have switched. Sookie is not the available sex partner Dawn was. She is an investigator asking Eric questions similar to the ones Bud asked Jason before he was taken into custody. We learn that like Jason, Eric holds a low opinion of Maudette, but views Dawn as worthy of his attention.
Once Eric has answered Sookie’s questions, he invites her to take a seat so that he can charm her. Is her disinterest as phony as Dawn’s was when she was on the phone with Jason? Eric’s encounter with Sookie is interrupted just as Jason’s was with Dawn, by the police intruding into his business. Notably, in both cases the men are innocent of the crimes the police suspect them of and victims of circumstance.
If Eric’s first appearance mirrors Jason’s, missing is a cell phone and a failed attempt to make a date. However, when Eric appears again later, he is enthroned once more at Fangtasia, but this time he is futilely texting Bill on his phone to arrange a meeting with Sookie. Now there is a parallel to the unconfirmed date made over the phone. Eventually Eric will go to Bill’s house to ensure a second meeting with the woman who has captured his interest, paralleling Jason’s unexpected visit to Dawn’s house after the police release him.
Jason was trying to run away from his fears; Eric is dealing with the boredom of living a thousand years. Their coping mechanism is the same–sex. What they don’t realize is that their sexual pursuits will trigger existential crises. Dawn launched Jason on the path to personal development when she made him realize that he cannot compete sexually with vampires, and Sookie will do the same for Eric when he starts to rediscover his humanity through his feelings for her.
The emotional devastation that Jason goes through in season one prefigures the character arc that Eric will experience season two. Jason is an emotional wreck and ends up on his knees crying into Dawn’s chest, not unlike Eric when he realizes that he is about to lose Godric. Season two is also when Eric starts questioning his core beliefs as Jason did the first season.
Since he gave up football, Jason’s identity has been wrapped up in being the best lover in Bon Temps, so when Dawn informs him that he can’t compete with vampires, he is shaken to the core and attempts to regain his lost status through sexual role playing. He assumes Eric’s identity and attacks Dawn when she returns from work, even going so far as to whisper in her ear how delicious her blood tastes.
The counterpoint to this scene is found in season two when Eric rescues Sookie from the Fellowship of the Sun. To allay her fears, Eric whispers, “Trust me,” and then impersonates a character that she is very familiar with, a simple country boy. Ultimately, neither Eric nor Jason’s role playing turns out successfully. Dawn runs Jason out of her house with a gun, and Eric must flee the Fellowship soldiers with their silver chains and wooden stakes.
Jason’s storyline season two foreshadows Eric’s season three. In Jason’s fierce determination to rescue Sookie from the Fellowship, we can see Eric’s when he rescues Pam from the magister. The love triangle Eric finds himself in with Russell and Talbot was prefigured through Jason’s interaction with Steve, Sarah, and Luke, and his relationship with Crystal provides a glimpse of the romance Amnesia Eric will have with Sookie season four.
